Pageant winners crowned
By Erienne Greene, Journal Staff WriterMARTINSBURG - Seven local women showcased their poise and talent in front of a large audience at the Apollo Civic Theatre Saturday night, but only two lucky contestants wore the winning crowns home.
Spenser Wempe was named the 2010 Miss Berkeley County, while Amber Miller earned the title of Miss North Eastern.
The local ladies competing in the 35th annual Miss Berkeley County and Miss North Eastern Scholarship Pageant were required to compete in different areas, including swimsuit and talent.
"Living in the Moment" was the theme of this year's pageant, and it appeared that all of the women competing were doing just that as they gave it their all to impress the panel of judges.
The talent portion of the evening included different dancing and singing performances.
Following the swimsuit and talent competitions was the interview portion of the evening, when the girls donned eye-catching evening gowns.
Mistress of Ceremony Allison Renee Williams, the Miss West Virginia 2003, praised the contestants in this year's event.
"These young ladies don't realize how much they're influencing young girls to pursue their dreams," Williams said.
Prior to the start of the night's entertainment, Shelley Nichols-Franklin, executive director of the pageant, said she was excited that the pageant was featuring a number of former Miss Berkeley County contestants back on the stage in honor of the event's anniversary.
One of those former queens, Dawn Rix, Miss Berkeley County 1991, sang for the crowd, and when asked by Williams about her own experiences as a winner, Rix said it was "great."
"My experience was very nice," she said. "To the public, it's all glitz and glamour ... but it takes a lot of courage for these women to do what they do."
Wempe is the daughter of William Wempe, and the 17-year-old currently attends Jefferson High School. Her platform is "Spreading the Love - Promoting Community Action for the Less Fortunate."
Miller, 23, is the daughter of William and Angela Miller. She graduated from Shepherd University and is currently attending West Virginia University. Her platform is "Make a Difference - Become a Mentor.
Wempe and Miller will each receive a $750 scholarship, an official crown and crown pin, a $500 in-kind scholarship to Shepherd University, $250 in clothing allowance for the Miss West Virginia pageant, a $100 scholarship donated by the Church of Martinsburg, flowers by Flowers Unlimited, and gift certificates from Serenity Day Spa and Gold's Gym in Martinsburg.
In addition to Nichols-Franklin, on the 2010 Miss Berkeley County Committee is Jennifer Barcinas-Miller, Donna Custer, Ruby Avey, Alison Everhart, Stephanie Payne, Marilyn Blaylock, Jima Sherard and Leslie Beightol.
