Laurel Highlands High School Auditorium won't be filled with boys and girls, but "Guys and Dolls" Thursday through Saturday.
"Guys and Dolls," a musical that takes place in New York City in the 1940s, is this year's Laurel Highlands' production.
The musical is the story of a small-time gambler, Nathan Detroit, who bets his big-time gambler pal, Sky Masterson, that Sky cannot make the next woman he sees fall in love with him.
As the story goes, the next doll that Sky and Nathan see is Sarah Brown, the sergeant of the neighborhood missionary, who preaches the dangers of drinking and gambling.
While the musical is older than the students who will be performing it, all the actors are excited about the weekend production.
Nicole Cipriani and Jennifer George are co-directing "Guys and Dolls."
"In the past we've done fun and crazy shows," Cipriani said, adding that they fell in love with the show after reading the script and watching the movie. "This year, we wanted to do something classy."
Cipriani said the show has amazing music with 22 songs and dancing routines for the cast of 53 to perform.
Auditions started the first week of December. Rehearsals started when the students returned from Christmas break; however, nine rehearsals were canceled because of last month's snow.
"The kids have put extra time into this," Cipriani said. "They've been working really hard."
The hard work will not be wasted on a show like "Guys and Dolls" because Cipriani said while the musical is vocally demanding, it also has bigger sets, bigger costumes, bigger lights and bigger sounds.
"So, it's all bigger," she said. The cast is made up mostly of sophomores and juniors.
One of those in the younger cast is sophomore Vanessa Frank, who's playing the role of Adelaide, Nathan Detroit's fiance and nightclub singer.
Frank, who's been acting in community theater since she was 10 years old, was excited to discover she landed one of the lead roles.
"The choreography is great," Frank said. "My fellow cast members are awesome."
Senior Matt Macar is playing the role of Sky Masterson. This production will be his first time as a lead.
"I was excited when I landed the role," Macar said. "I saw it before."
"I think this is going to be a really good show," Frank said.
The Laurel Highlands High School will present "Guys and Dolls" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the high school auditorium.
Tickets are $9 and can be purchased through the high school office and at the box office on the days of the show.
There will be a dinner beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday. It is sponsored by the Laurel Highlands Academic Foundation. Meal and show price are $20.
