While many residents are tired of "grumbling in the snow," the people behind the scenes of the upcoming Connellsville Area High School Musical are ready for "Singin' in The Rain."
"For the most part, it's all going well," said Andrew Miller, technical director for the musical, who said they've had a bit of a delay in their schedule because of the February snowfall, but anticipate that the show will still go on.
Taking place in 1927, "Singin' in The Rain" is a story about Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont, a famous on-screen romantic pair with Lina mistaking that for real love.
When Don and Lina's latest film is transformed into a musical, Don's voice is perfect for the songs, but Lina's voice needs to be dubbed over, which brings in Kathy Selden, an aspiring actress. As Kathy works on the movie, Don falls in love with her.
The musical features dancing, multiple stage changes, costume changes and the songs "Fit as a Fiddle (And Ready for Love)," "All I Do is Dream of You," "Singin' In The Rain," "Make 'Em Laugh," "Beautiful Girl," "You Were Meant for Me," "You Are My Lucky Star," "Moses Supposes," "Good Morning," "Would You" and "Broadway Melody Ballet."
"The newest thing is to have water on the stage as rain," Miller said, adding that it's new for the crew as well as Miller, who has been involved with the shows since 1994.
Miller said the show requires many scene changes â" there are four scene changes just in the opening â" and there also will be little props and items that will need attention during the run of the show.
"This is one of the largest scene changes I've ever done," Miller said.
"This is mostly a different type of show," said Carol Kirk, head costume designer and prop department for the show, along with assistance from Nicole Grindle, Ashley McCutcheon, Katie Skiles, Eleanorann Miller, Cassie Stout and Racquel Bastian.
"We've sewn a lot of raincoats, trench coats and slickers," Bastian said about the costumes for the cast of 54. "A lot of alterations."
Because "Singin' in The Rain" is something of a period-piece show, Kirk said they're not making original costumes from scratch, but have purchased clothing from local discount stores. Luckily for them, the clothing of that period made a comeback and the clothing was available, she added.
"I tried to look for things that are retro," Kirk said, noting that the costumes will really make an impression for the Broadway Melody scene. "It's fast, colorful, and that's what people like."
Tickets are still on sale for "Singin' in The Rain." The ticket office will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The musical will run Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Connellsville Area High School Auditorium. Price for Thursday is $10 per person; $12 on the other dates. For more information, call 724-628-1350.
