Kindergarten registration will be Tuesday and Wednesday in Carnegie Elementary School, 301 Franklin Ave., and Crafton Elementary School, 1874 Crafton Blvd.

The process will include a series of assessments for children. More information is available at www.carlynton.k12.pa.us.

The school district and the community have formed a partnership to transform the stadium track into a regulation track and field facility.

As a free community asset, the track will be a gathering place for those who want to improve their health by walking the track or just relaxing by its grassy fields.

Organizers are seeking individuals, groups, corporations and foundations to help fund this project. However, before many grants can be submitted, the initiative will need to have matching funds to qualify.

A fundraiser has been scheduled in memory of past Honorary Chairperson, Foge Fazio, who died Dec. 2.

A Cornell "Night at the Races" will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 10 in the Coraopolis Moose on 4th Avenue. Tickets are $15 and include food, beverages and entertainment such as raffles and an auction.

School directors have approved summer working hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday from June 21 to July 30. Offices and facilities will be closed on Fridays. This is the third year for summer hours to reduce energy consumption.

• Appointments are being accepted for parents/guardians to register children for kindergarten and first grade Monday-Friday next week in Sharon Community Presbyterian Church at 522 Carnot Road, Moon.

To enter kindergarten, a child must be 5 years old by Sept. 30, and to enter first grade, a student must be 6 years old by that date.

Registration appointments are required. To schedule an appointment, contact the district registrar's office, 412-264-9440, ext. 1132.

• Hyde Elementary School second-graders will be touring Pittsburgh free of charge this spring courtesy of an $800 grant from the Target Field Trips Grant program.

Second-grade teacher Marcia Welsh will use the funds to take approximately 50 second-grade students on an amphibious Just Ducky Tour and a Duquesne Incline ride and tour.

The field trip serves as the social studies culminating activity. The social studies curriculum, designed by Hyde teachers, introduces students to Pittsburgh, its geographical characteristics and its residents.

The independent, nonprofit South Fayette Foundation for Excellence will hold its inaugural fundraiser at 7 p.m. March 20 at the Hickory Heights Golf Club, 116 Hickory Heights Drive.

Admission to the adults-only event is $40 and includes refreshments.

Silent auction items will include tickets to the LPGA U.S. Women's Open Championship at the Oakmont Country Club, museum admissions, overnight hotel stays and theater tickets.

A children's program of arts, crafts, face painting, and photographs with the Cat in the Hat will be held in celebration of Read Across America from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Mall at Robinson. Cookies will be provided by the West Allegheny Food Service Department.

The activity will culminate a week of programs such as educational classroom activities such as games, puzzles, artwork, and learning exercises -- Dr. Seuss style -- will emphasize the importance of reading at the elementary schools.

The Food Services Department has been serving green eggs and ham and students and staff have been dressing in Dr. Seuss attire throughout the week. The elementary librarians are sponsoring the DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) program each day.

The Read Across America celebration is a collaborative effort involving the district, the West Allegheny Education Association, and the West Allegheny Education Support Professionals Association.

• Students and staff members have been sponsoring fundraisers, collections, and events to aid victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Hoops for Haiti Collection is sponsored by the West Allegheny Athletic Department, through the initiative of senior basketball players John O'Donnell and Nick Herman.

Hats for Haiti Day was sponsored by the Donaldson Student Council. Have a Heart for Haiti Health and Hygiene Kits -- items such as hand towels, wash cloths and tooth brushes -- are being collected by McKee, Donaldson, and Wilson students and staff through the end of the month.

HeART for Haiti Art Shows are being sponsored by the Art Department at Donaldson and Wilson and a Haitian Relief Dance-A-Thon is being organized by the middle school sixth grade Super Stars Team.

Haitian Relief Staff Jeans Day was sponsored by the middle school staff, a Haiti Walk was sponsored by the middle school Helping Hands mini-course program.

And, hygiene kits, a collection of personal care items and medical supplies, is being coordinated by the high school Leadership Team.
