Kahuku Unit hikes set for March 14, April 10
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park celebrates the human history of its Kahuku Unit with guided hikes from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Titled "People and Land of Kahuku," the programs occur the following dates: March 14 and April 10.
The Kahuku gate on the mountain side of Highway 11 near mile marker 70 in Ka'u will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants should meet at the ranch buildings inside the gate. There is no need to sign up for this hike and four-wheel drive vehicles are not required.
The hike explores ways people have lived on the vast Kahuku lands from the earliest Hawaiian settlements through the park's current and future projects. This moderately difficult hike traverses 21/2 miles of rugged terrain, including lava fields, pastures and historic ranch roads. Boots, long pants and raingear are recommended.
A treasured home and rich resource from traditional times, a working ranch since the 1860s, a World War II radar station and now part of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the varied landscapes of Kahuku tell stories about the past and offer promise for the future.

Memory check offered to public
The social service department at Life Care Center of Kona is celebrating March as Social Work month along with the nation.
This year in celebration of Social Work month, the social service workers are offering memory checks on March 19.
Many people in the general population become concerned over forgetfulness symptoms and quickly become anxious or depressed. This leads to social withdrawal, poor eating and sleeping habits and generally decreased activity. If a medical condition started this onslaught, then the medical condition can continue to cause deterioration in the body, and forgetfulness increases.
Anyone can call the social service department at Life Care Center of Kona and schedule a memory check. The screening takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The participant must sign permission for the results to be sent to a personal physician, as the social service staff will not interpret the results of the screening.
Call 322-2790 for an appointment.

Wildfire protection plan meeting slated
In the wake of last month's forest fire which burned more than 1,800 acres of land in Kealakekua, the Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization is preparing a community wildfire protection plan for South Kona. The plan process involves gathering community input in order to develop locally supported solutions to mitigate wildfires and the devastation they cause.
As part of its outreach program, Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization provides wildfire education for Hawaii communities. Outreach efforts include educating residents about implementing Firewise principles at their homes. Firewise principles show home and business owners how to create defensible spaces around buildings and communities by utilizing appropriate landscaping.
The organization encourages residents to learn more about Firewise principles and to provide their input for the South Kona Community Wildfire Protection Plan. It will be hosting a public meeting on the plan process beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Konawaena Elementary School.
For more information on how to get involved, call Gail Byrne at 938-8880.
