"Undercover Boss" at Hooters. Is this sexist and exploitation of women ... - Democratic Underground.com

if you're asking what i think, yes, the women on the street told the truth about their feelings -- they feel uncomfortable and disrespected and unwanted as customers at hooters, would YOU bring your women's book club to eat wings at hooters? nope, the employees are dressed like that to create a cheap-ass pseudo-strip club atmosphere without the girls having to actually take off their clothes

as a woman, i know that my business is not wanted by hooters, so they need to make their $$$ from the customers they DO want

as for as the employees, sure, if you have a nice body, it's a capitalist society, and i don't blame you for trying to sell it, i just happen to think it's kinda stupid to sell your body to a lot of guys for tip money, when you could sell your body to one guy for REAL money plus benefits -- in other words, you're only young once, you want to spend it on your feet at hooters or you want to spend it meeting and marrying a doctor? one choice clearly pays more than the other choice but whatever...presumably it's still YOUR choice -- i have to assume that a lot of these girls, going in, have a personality or intellect problem such that they already know they aren't going to catch a desirable husband hence they have to hustle it for the tips

as for strippers, again, if you can't do math and you think tipping out the whole world and rubbing off multiple guy's private parts with your rear end is the best use of a beautiful body, well, that's your decision *shrug*

if your body is for sale, and i won't argue with you -- your body should be yours to sell as you please -- why not try to get a better price for it than you'll get at hooters? is it lack of self respect? do you just assume going in that no decent man w. a job will marry you? i dunno

why do feminists have to "re-think" anything here? if you are for sale, you are for sale, you've already made that decision about yourself and your body -- from here on out, we're just haggling about price

feminists for the most part believe that women should be able to earn enough money that they don't have to be dependent on men to get $$$, benefits, etc -- sad to say, for most women, that world STILL doesn't exist -- so when you talk about "choice," i have to wonder what "choice" some of these women really had, most likely they had NO equivalent choice that paid the same for whatever reason (too dumb to go to college and meet someone on the way up, too screwed-up to keep a relationship, who knows? but if a beautiful woman can't keep a decent man, there's a problem SOMEWHERE)

maybe the world needs to re-think instead of feminists "need" to re-think

being beautiful is WAY different from being an athlete, being an athlete is an achievement, being beautiful is an accident of fate, to judge an athlete and a stripper on the same terms is ridiculous on the face of it
