Meet belly-dancing ballerina Cat Earisman - Burlington Free Press

Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it.

Cat Earisman teaches belly-dancing in Essex, but that’s not all. She also teaches yoga, pilates and takes a few classes herself, in ballet. We spoke with Earisman, 49, at Mansfield Physical Therapy in Essex where she practices Swedish, Thai and deep tissue massage. She lives in Essex with her husband of 15 years, Scott. They have two children.

How long have you lived in Vermont?

We’ve lived here for 11 years now. I grew up in New York and New Jersey.

Why Vermont?

Quality of life. We didn’t want our kids to have to go through metal detectors to go to school. We did some research and picked Vermont because of the lifestyle. We wanted a college town with contemporary ideas, free-thinking and different cultural events happening regularly. You’ll find that in a college town, and we knew the Flynn was here. Everything just fit. We also wanted to be within a day’s drive to all the grandparents.

Tell me about your job.

I do yoga, pilates, belly-dancing and teach aqua-aerobics. I’ve been in the industry since 1981. I like working with the human body. It fascinates me. I do massage, including Thai, too.

What’s Thai massage?

It’s done on the floor on a mat. The person is fully clothed, and it’s almost like me doing yoga to you. It’s a little more interactive.

What exactly is belly-dancing?

Belly-dancing is a dance of fertility. It’s a fun way to increase spinal mobility, which is a huge thing. There are chunks of our spine that we just stop using over time and it’s important to maintain that mind-body connection. Simply put, we need to move our bodies. My goal is for every woman in Chittenden County to have great posture.

Where do you work?

I work here at Mansfield Physical Therapy, The Sports and Fitness Edge, Hammerfit and Vermont Ballet Theater and for the town of Essex. Essentially, I’m self-employed because I am responsible for filling my own classes.

What do you teach at the Vermont Ballet Theater?

I have been teaching the ballet students yoga and pilates for about seven years.

What do you like best about your job?

I’m an interactive teacher. I really love it when people have light bulb moments, and I like to leave class or a massage feeling like I’ve helped somebody. I like to have fun and make people laugh, too.

The next session of bellydancing through Essex Parks and Rec is happening March 17 through April 21 on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at Hammerfit. I also have a beginner yoga class at Hammerfit at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, and you don’t have to be a gym member to join me.
