Education notebook: More school statistics - Abilene Reporter-News

Another local high school has the chance at a state championship today. We’re all rooting for the Wylie High School Lady Bulldogs in their big basketball game against Liberty-Eylau High School this morning. Besides the plethora of athletic stats our sports writers provide, I thought I’d offer a little extra competition fodder:

n Enrollment: Wylie ISD has 3,191 students; Liberty-Eylau ISD has 2,778.

n Annual athletics spending: Wylie ISD spends $215 per student; Liberty-Eylau spends $233 per student.

n High school completion rate: Wylie graduates 98.2 percent; Liberty-Eylau graduates 81.7 percent.

n ACT scores: Wylie’s students score 23.3 on average; Liberty-Eylau students score 18.7.

n Distance from Frank Erwin Center in Austin: Wylie is 189 miles away, and Liberty-Eylau is 372 miles away.

Wylie education foundation

Speaking of Wylie, district board member Becky Rentz is working to get together an education foundation.

“We’re just in the planning stages right now,” Rentz said, but she hopes by next spring, the foundation could have enough money to start considering scholarships, special school projects or light facility enhancements.

She has recently attended workshops with Superintendent Joey Light to learn how to launch the project, which includes filing for nonprofit status, gathering a steering committee and building an alumni base for former students to have an avenue to make memorial gifts or donations to honor favorite teachers.

“I just think it could be a good thing for Wylie,” Rentz said.

The Abilene Education Foundation is celebrating its 10th year of service to the Abilene Independent School District.

Pass driver’s ed yet?

Ford will have some new cars at Wylie High School today and the company will donate $20 to the Wylie High School prom for everyone who takes a test drive, up to $6,000.

No doubt some high school students are eager to get behind the wheel of a new F-150 with visions of graduation gifts dancing in their heads. (FYI â€" students must be over 17 to take a spin.)

Other cars expected to make appearances include the Taurus, Fusion Hybrid, Escape, Explorer and Edge. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Those Ford folks ought to tune those radios to KKHR 106.3 so the Lady Bulldog fans can listen to the game during their joy rides.

One more FAFSA workshop

Parents and students have one last opportunity to learn how to apply for college financial aid at a FAFSA workshop Tuesday at Abilene High School.

The workshop will be in the Learning Resource Center at 6 p.m.
