Students Get Motivated For FCAT's With A Song

DORAL (CBS4) ― A group of South Florida elementary school students are getting motivated for next week's FCAT testing with the help of a high energy song.

Third grade teacher Diana Arias from Renaissance Elementary Charter School in Doral rewrote the lyrics to the Black Eyed Peas hit song "I've Got A Feeling."

The new lyrics; "I got a feeling (woo hoo) that we're all going to pass the FCAT" has kids dancing in their seats. The students enjoy performing the song in between all that studying and preparing for the start of the FCAT's.

"The kids are motivated and excited," said RECS Assistant Principal Paul Thompson. "They've been working really hard and we know they're going to do really well."

The state-mandated test is critical for third-grade students, who must pass the reading part or risk being retained.

Testing begins Tuesday, March 9th and runs through March 19th. Students will be tested in reading, math and science. Students in grades three through 10 take the reading and math portions and fifth, eighth- and 11th-graders will be tested in science. Students in grades four, eight and 10 took the writing FCAT in February.

High-school students must pass the reading and math parts to get high school diplomas. They start taking the test as sophomores, and have multiple chances to pass each section.

After the exams are scored, the state assigns schools grades based largely on FCAT results. Renaissance Elementary Charter School has been an "A" school for 7-years in a row. Renaissance Middle Charter School is also an "A" school.
