FINALISTS: Two Spring Valley High students were recently named National Merit Scholar finalists. Allison Merritt, who maintains a 4.0 grade point average and wants to study chemistry in college, is the daughter of Mark and Susan Merritt. Ross Evans, son of Dr. Joe and Teresa Evans, has also maintained a 4.0 grade point average and plans to major in political science and English. Both students have been active in school and the community.
TIRES: Where to dispose of old tires? The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and Gov. Joe Manchin's REAP program host a local tire collection for old tires from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at Wayne County Solid Waste Authority Office and Recycling Center, Bluefield Street. With a valid ID for Wayne County, each resident may dispose of up to 10 old tires.
BREAKFAST: Junior League of Huntington hosts the fifth annual character breakfast at 9 a.m. or 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13, at Big Sandy Superstore Arena. The two sessions include a catered breakfast served with dozens of children's characters, including action and super heroes, cartoon characters, princesses and others. Face painting, arts and crafts and story time are also featured. Proceeds help support the league's outreach efforts and its new program, "Kids in the Kitchen." MILITARY: Air Force Airman Matthew R. Wymer graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman, a 2005 graduate of Russell High School in Kentucky, is son of Barbara Sutton of Flatwoods, Ky., and Gary Wymer of Ashland.

PAGES: Four Wayne County students can turn the page when they become adults and remember that February Day in 2010 when they were actually a page for Sen. H. Truman Chafin in Charleston. Tyler Bellomy and Spencer Stephens from Wayne High School and Allyson Meadows and Celine Obrego from Ceredo-Kenova Middle were pages for a day in February.
BY THE PINT: Nearly 30 pints of blood -- 27 to be exact -- was donated the last Saturday in February at Bethesda United Methodist Church. The American Red Cross blood drive honored the late Mary Dishman, a member of the Ona congregation.
