LOURDES CENTRAL SCHOOL â€" GLOBAL SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP

Global School Partnership is all about celebrating diversity, appreciating differences, understanding view points, examining perceptions, reflecting on global issues, building friendships and lots more.

The GSP programme is managed and delivered by a consortium of four organistions: British Council, Cambridge Education Foundation, UK One World Linking Association (UKOWLA) and Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). It is and is funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) UK.

In 2007, LCS was introduced to Pilton the Bluecoat C of E Junior School.  Over the years the contact programme grew stronger. We had 60 students from both schools commence an email contact programme. After initial self introduction, local geography of both Barnstaple (where Pilton Schoool is situated) and Mangalore were discussed.

Unlike Indian schools that work from June to march, the Western School works from September to July. Against our 1200 students, they are only 300 from grade 3 to 6. Their school is spread on the ground floor only, but LCS is a three storeyed building. With all these disparities too the two schools have come so close and it is just the feeling of oneness i.e., learning experience in a global village.

The Principal Ms Grace Noronha and Mrs J Rai, GSP Coordinator, visited our partner school in the UK from 9th October to the 19th of October 2008. It was a thrilling experience to observe the classes, discuss various issues and interact with students and enrich on global issues.

The first reciprocal visit of our partners came through from Feb 11th to Feb 18th 2009. The Head teacher Mr. Paul Mulligan and GSP Coordinator Ian Thomas had a first hand experience of Indian hospitality tradition and culture.  They were so fascinated by the Indian classical dance “Bharatanatyam” and have sponsored a student â€" teacher from a prestigious fine arts institution of Mangalore to give a taste of Indian classical dance to the students Pilton School. They also witnessed a mega show ‘The world is my Oyster’ put up by around 600 students of LCS.

Plans for the second year partnership was signed. We took up Sustainable Development Project for the year 2010. As part of this, Rain Water Harvesting, Vermiculture and Gardening (medicinal, vegetable and rock) was introduced. Power Point presentations and questionnaires were sent to the UK.

This year the Principal Ms Grace Noronha, Ms Violet D’Souza â€" English Coordinator, Ms Linet D’Souza and Ms Rekha Shetty of LCS will be visiting UK from 4th October to 14th October 2009. They will present the given topics to the students of Pilton Bluecoat School. They will witness the education system by observing lessons, meeting the staff and senior management, planning joint curricular work and the like.

As the Chinese proverb goes “ Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand”. What a better way to develop global citizens than to put young people in touch with each other in a borderless world, where they can learn from each other and explore issues that affect everybody, everywhere.
 

 Global school partnerships are a dynamic and exciting approach to global citizenship.      
  
 
The programme provides advice and guidance, professional development opportunities and grants to schools that are using school partnerships as a means for developing a global dimension within their curriculum. Joint curricular work between partner schools and exchange visits widen perspectives and change attitudes and values.

What is a global dimension?

The term ‘global dimension’ refers to the extent to which global development issues are integrated within the formal curriculum. It consists of five key concepts:

Social justice and equity
Diversity
Globalisation and interdependence
Sustainable development
Peace and conflict
The programme aims to raise young people’s awareness of global development issues and equip them with the skills and knowledge to become active global citizens. Working with a partner school can bring an authentic global dimension to the classroom, enhancing teaching and learning in all partner schools.
