The Historical Society of Old Newbury is unlocking the rare and important weapons and uniforms of three centuries that are in its collection next week to kick off its 2010 Connoisseurship Series. The program will be presented Tuesday, March 9, at 7 p.m. at the Cushing House Museum, 98 High St., Newburyport.
Chris Snow, antiquarian and weapons aficionado, will highlight some of the specialized uses of the items as well as a progression of technological evolutions that changed the field of battle.
The historical society's Connoisseurship Series aims to help individuals weigh the quality, condition and desirability of collectibles, and features the expertise of authorities in the field as well as examples from its museum collection.
The series continues March 16 with "Political and Social Clues in Art: Observations on Newburyport's Historical Prints" presented by John W. Raimo, a dealer of fine paintings and works on paper for more than 25 years. It wraps up March 23 with advanced collector Byron M. Getchell offering "From Soup to Nuts: More American Silver Flatware from the 1840s to the Early 1900s." All programs start at 7 p.m. and last about one hour.

On-air laughs with Old-Time Radio Players
The Seabrook Old-Time Radio Players revisit an early episode of the "Burns & Allen" show when they perform Wednesday, March 10, at the Seabrook Library at 25 Liberty Lane.
The group will give two performances, a matinee at 3:30 p.m. and an evening showing at 6:30. In addition to the "Burns & Allen" piece in which Gracie Allen misconstrues a telephone conversation and thinks that someone is out to murder her husband, the program will also feature a episode from the long-running comedy series "The Phil Harris/Alice Faye Show."

Nostalgia Nights return to Hobo's Café
The Lighthouse Trio returns from its winter hiatus to serve up its monthly Nostalgia Night of vintage tunes on Wednesday, March 3, at Hobo's Café & Lounge at 5 Broadway at Salisbury Beach.
This month, the main trio of George Blodgett on bass, Lou Masiello on drums and Bob Allison on piano and vocals will be joined by John Nourse of Andover on drums. John Hicks and his guitar-vocal trio from Gloucester will be the half-time feature.
The music goes from 7 to 9 p.m. There is no cover, but donations to support the music program at Hobo's are welcome. A buffet will be available for $6.
Nostalgia Nights are held the first Wednesday of the month at Hobo's. Bob Allison will resume his weekly piano bar sing-alongs on the other Wednesdays at 7 p.m. starting March 17. 'Vaudeville Retrospective'
R.W. Bacon of Newburyport, the self-proclaimed last living vaudevillian, brings his audience into the world of vaudeville in a free lecture and performance for area seniors on Wednesday, March 10, at 2 p.m. at the Firehouse Center for the Arts, Market Square, Newburyport.
A performing artist and historian, Bacon will tell stories of the technological and social forces that set the stage for vaudeville. His lecture will be augmented with digitally projected graphics and audio/video clips and interspersed with live performance.
An all-but-retired acrobatic juggler, comic dancer and jazz/ragtime banjoist, Bacon was a journalist, editor and publication designer before embarking on a 30-year career to tour nationally with his wife, L.J. Newton, in their now-retired theatrical shows. More recently, he was engaged by the filmmakers of "Pink Panther 2" to be a prop consultant, coordinator of a team of juggling waiters and the juggling stunt-double for Steve Martin.

Civil War show and tell for Roundtable
A Civil War show and tell highlights this month's meeting of the Civil War Roundtable on Wednesday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hilton Senior Center, 43 Lafayette Road (Route 1), Salisbury.

Amesbury Rocks for Haiti benefit concert
Five local bands will take the stage for the benefit concert Amesbury Rocks for Haiti on Friday, March 12, at Amesbury Middle School Performance Center on Main Street.
Kangaralien featuring the progressive acoustic sounds of Steve Belleville and Eric Clemenzi, headlines the show. The multi-generational event will also feature middle school rockers Errata, performances by Amesbury High School students, party band Sour Cream and The Closers, led by Amesbury High School teacher Bob Kelley.
The show starts at 7 p.m. Admission is a minimum $5. Proceeds will support earthquake relief efforts in Haiti by the nonprofit Partners in Development based in Ipswich. Jeans & Jewels dance party for crisis center
Put on your jeans and jewels and get ready for a dance party that will benefit families affected by domestic violence. The Party: Jeans & Jewels â" the annual fundraiser to support programs offered by the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center through its offices in Newburyport and Amesbury â" is set for Saturday, March 13, from 6 p.m. to midnight at DiBurro's in the Ward Hill section of Haverhill.
Kiss 108 personality and "TV Diner" host Billy Costa will serve as celebrity guest auctioneer for the event, which will feature a live and silent auction, dancing, cocktails and food stations.
Louis and Cyndi Barry Rubenfeld are co-chairs of the fundraiser, and Arthur S. Page Insurance in Newburyport is the presenting sponsor.
Items up for grabs in the live auction include a chance to join Costa and the "TV Diner" crew for a taping of a Cookin' with Costa segment, a trip to Africa, private yacht cruise for up to 49 guests in and around Boston, weeklong getaway to St. Barts and Boston Celtics, Red Sox and Bruins tickets. The silent auction will feature New England weekend vacations, a fishing excursion, children's party events, jewelry, spa services and gift certificates to local restaurants and retailers.

Great Chefs Night goes to Regatta for hospital
Newburyport's Anna Jaques Hospital Aid Foundation is gearing up for its annual Great Chefs Night on Friday, March 19, at The Governor's Academy, St., Byfield.
This year's event features a regatta theme. Newburyport Mayor Donna Holaday will serve as the evening's master of ceremonies.
The festivities will begin with gourmet tastings of food prepared by more than 20 of the area's chefs from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by live entertainment from 8 to 10 p.m. Performers will include the Pentucket Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dave Schumacher, the Alex Prezzano Quartet and the a cappella groups the co-ed Pentucket Treble Makers and the all-girl Pentucket Soul Sisters.
There will also be a silent auction of various nautically themed items, include one week in St. Thomas, two nights in Kennebunkport, Maine, with dinner at The White Barn Inn, a 17-foot boat slip at the Marina at Hatters Point in Amesbury, a sail for four aboard the Nautical Wave out of Newburyport and more. A cash bar serving up the night's signature cocktail, the Sunburn, and other drinks will be available.
