Jacqui White couldn't put a finger on which emotions she was feeling as she watched an Olympic medal being placed around her son's neck.
She was thinking about the early morning practices and late nights coordinating costumes, flights, hotels and schedules. She was thinking about the little boy on skates, learning to glide around the rink. She was thinking about the hard work and sacrifice.
But mostly she was thinking how proud she was of her son, Charlie White, who with his partner, Meryl Davis, won a silver medal in ice dancing Monday.
"It's all been worth it," said Jacqui White of Bloomfield Township. "Our kids love it so much. As a mom, I feel really privileged to be a part of it. It's been a lot of work, though."
The Whites live about 10 minutes from the Davises, who reside in West Bloomfield. Jacqui White said she and Cheryl Davis, Meryl's mom, go shopping and sightseeing while traveling all over the world to attend their offsprings' competitions.
"We're always at each others' homes," she said.
A group of friends and family mobbed Charlie White, 22, and Meryl Davis, 23 -- both juniors at the University of Michigan -- at a party Monday night after they won in Vancouver, Jacqui White said. She got to hold her son's medal and congratulate him in person.
Former coach Seth Chafetz, who paired White and Davis up when they were 8 and 9, said it was a night filled with tears, hugs, laughter and a lot of pride.
"I always knew they could do this," said Chafetz, who had just returned to Detroit from Vancouver on Tuesday. "Even when they were little kids, they commanded attention."
Back in Michigan, a group of about 100 people -- mostly alumni and former teachers from the Roeper School in Birmingham where White graduated in 2005 -- were at the Moose Preserve in Bloomfield Hills cheering on the pair.
Those who train alongside the pair at Arctic Edge skating rink in Canton not only cheered for White and Davis, but also for a team that skated for Canada -- and won gold. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir also are friends with Davis and White.
"It's a great day for Canton, eh?" said Arctic Edge general manager Craig O'Neill. "It's nice when you have one team or person that skates here who won a medal. But to have two teams is unbelievable. It couldn't happen to two better teams."
Pairs skaters Natalie Feigin, 19, of Toronto and Genia Krasniak, 23, of Canton are training at the Canton rink for the 2014 Olympics. They agreed the performances of both couples were inspiring.
"It was breathtaking to watch and brought tears to my eyes," Feigin said. "It pumps you up."
