Fire chief: Be careful of thin ice - Eagle-Tribune

WINDHAM â€" Windham fire Chief Tom McPherson warns people that the ice on local bodies of water is breaking up with the fluctuating temperatures.

He urges extreme caution for anyone considering venturing onto the ice.

Fly fishing show set for this weekend in Pelham

PELHAM â€" The Fly Fish New Hampshire Show will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Pelham Fish and Game Club, 300 Simpson Mill Road.

The show, sponsored by the Merrimack River Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Fish and Game Club, is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Vendors will include fly shops, guides, outfitters, and sporting and conservation organizations. There also will be seminars and exhibits.

Pelham students excel at music festival

PELHAM â€" The Pelham Memorial School flute, clarinet and saxophone chamber ensembles received "excellent" comments, and the choral students received A ratings at the recent New Hampshire Music Educators Association Solo & Ensemble Festival.

The festival, held at Keene State College, gives students the opportunity to perform musical selections in front of an adjudicator who not only grades the performance but also takes a few moments to work with the students.

The students had the opportunity to observe performances by other schools before leaving the festival.

Plan on having fun at Woodbury carnival

SALEM â€" The Woodbury School PTSA is planning its annual Winter Carnival Friday, March 12, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Winter Carnival is an evening of family-friendly entertainment, food, craft activities, games, prizes and more.

Among the most-anticipated activities is the E-Game Zone, featuring the latest games for Wii, PlayStation and other platforms. Students will have the chance to cheer on classmates as they compete for the honor of 2010 All-School Pie Eating Champion. Students can compete in the "Beano" beanbag toss championship, and watch their favorite teacher stumped by challenging questions in the popular Woodbury Faculty Feud.

New crafts this year include spin-painted Frisbees and sand art bottles. There will be dancing and games, face-painting, manicures, a candy walk and other activities. A Scholastic Book Fair offers families an opportunity to purchase books in this annual fundraiser.

Drawings for dozens of prizes, such as autographed Red Sox and Bruins memorabilia, tickets to sporting events, gift cards to local services and restaurants, music downloads, movies, and prize baskets donated by the 11 school teams will be held at the end of the evening. Admission is $2 and benefits the Woodbury PTSA.

Enjoy 1950s fun in Kingston next week

KINGSTON â€" The Kingston Veterans Club will offer Sock Hop Night on Saturday, March 13, from 7 p.m. to midnight.

The event, featuring 1950s fun, is at the club, 36 Church St. There will be hula hoops, limbo contests and prices for the best '50s costume. The disc jockey starts at 8 p.m. The cost is $5 per person.

Diabetes health series offered in Derry

DERRY â€" Diabetes Healthcare of New Hampshire at Derry Medical Center will offer an educational series focusing on various topics relating to diabetes care.

The first meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the medical center, 6 Tsienneto Road.

The topic is Healthy Eating Choices for Your Heart, presented by diabetes educator Lori Muller.

These free sessions will be held the fourth Wednesday of each month. They will address issues such as diagnostic criteria and monitoring; meal planning and exercise; medications and up-to-date management tools; problem-solving; and coping.
