Veterans presentation
River's Edge retirement community will host a special veterans presentation on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
David McKay will advise veterans and veterans' spouses on how to qualify for little-known, rarely used veterans benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

Poverty simulation
Step Up Savannah and Hands On Savannah of the United Way of the Coastal Empire are partnering to host a poverty simulation Friday.
The simulation is open to the public and will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Center for Professional and Continuing Education, Armstrong Atlantic State University.
The simulation is open to anyone who wants to learn more about what it's like to live in poverty in our community. Participation is free, but registration is required.

Southeast Family History Expo

Rape Crisis Center fundraiser
The UnMaskarade live and silent auction to benefit the Rape Crisis Center is 6:30-10 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Savannah International Convention Center.
Cost is $75 per person, which includes a free drink. Masquerade cocktail attire is suggested.
There will be heavy hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar; entertainment by the Ben Tucker Jazz Trio; and a $5 raffle for your choice of a previously-owned car or $1,500.

Pre-kindergarten applications
Applications for the 2010-2011 Pre-Kindergarten Program are available April 12-May 7.
You may apply at two different school sites; if completing two applications, your first choice must be in the school in your attendance zone. (Only two applications may be submitted).
Children will be selected through a lottery process during the week of May 17. Parents will receive written notification of acceptance or waiting-list status.
Parents of children who will be 4 years of age before or on Sept. 1 may go to any of the sites with the program to obtain an application beginning April 12. The information desk at 208 Bull St. also will have applications. Program locations are subject to change.

EOA needs volunteers
Share your time and special talents with others by joining the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of EOA. Through RSVP seniors 55 and older serve in various community organizations 1 to 40 hours per week.

ReStore seeks donations
Savannah's Habitat for Humanity is seeking donations from local contractors, retailers and homeowners to fill the shelves of a new ReStore during the month of February.
The Habitat Savannah ReStore is expected to open in March.

Phone book recycling drive
The PTAs of the Savannah-Chatham County public schools and SP Recycling are sponsoring a phone book recycling drive again this year. The drive began Jan. 22 and will end March 23.
The following items can be included in this year's recycling effort: books, newspapers, magazines, catalogs, white office paper and phonebooks.

Online help for High School Graduation Test
Registration has begun for a free online remediation course for high school students to help them pass the science and/or social studies portion of the Georgia High School Graduation Test.
FreeOnline ExPreSS will be offered by the Georgia Department of Education online to all high school students and certificate of attendance recipients who were unsuccessful on or who have not yet taken the science and/or social studies GHSGT.
Students can create their own registration account using their Georgia Testing Identifier number. For detailed instructions, go to https://www.georgiastandards.org/Resources/Pages/Tools/ExPreSS.aspx.
The summer Project ExPreSS program is scheduled June 14-25.
Wild Game Supper
The Friends of Coastal Gardens' Wild Game Supper at Bamboo Farm is 6:30 p.m. Feb. 26.
Volunteers and Friends of Coastal Gardens members will serve a meal of hors d'oeuvres, fried quail, venison Swiss steak, grits, gravy, winter salad, hot biscuits and Key Lime pie. Dinner will be served at the Lakeside Pavilion. Donations are $20 per plate and must be reserved in advance by Feb. 24.

Funds raised support the University of Georgia's Bamboo Farm & Coastal Gardens, located at 2 Canebrake Road off U.S. 17 in Savannah.
'Let's Dance' to improved health
Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to boogie your way to better health during the Let's Dance, Savannah! event from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Center Court at Savannah Mall.
The day of dance demonstrations and classes is being offered free of charge to encourage dance as a legitimate form of exercise and to teach people about the importance of cardiovascular health.
Free healthy snacks, blood pressure checks, bone density scans, body mass index measurements and blood glucose testing will also be offered.
CERT training
Community Emergency Response Team training is being offered to teach Chatham County residents about family and workplace disaster preparedness, small fire suppression, light search and rescue techniques and basic disaster medical operations.
Training will take place on the following dates:
-- 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 6.
-- 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 7.
-- 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 13.
-- 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 14.
The CERT course is 20 hours. Classes are taught by Chatham County emergency response personnel. Upon completion, participants will receive a CERT disaster kit, certificate of completion and an invitation to join the Chatham County CERT organization.
There is a $20 registration fee that will be refunded upon completion of the course.
